Mindfulness Beyond Meditation: Cultivating Equanimity and Social Connection during Challenging Times
Social upheaval, cultural divisions, and irrational thinking can’t just be ‘meditated away’. This presentation explores the application of mindfulness practices beyond meditation, underscoring how philosophical and psychological principles can guide the alleviation of suffering when embodied through thoughts, speech, and actions. Our session will define equanimity and its role in navigating the stresses and uncertainties of contemporary life. The importance of social connection and community as a cornerstone of mental well-being will also be highlighted. Attendees will gain insights into practical strategies for integrating mindfulness into therapeutic practice to support emotional stability and resilience during challenging times. Through presentation, guided experiential exercise, and discussion, Dr. Cammarata will define equanimity, review key research findings related to social connection and mental health, and address skills, concepts, and practices relevant to psychological wellbeing during challenging times.
Learning Objectives
1. Describe the clinical implications of the relationship between social connectedness and mental health.
2. Define equanimity and explain how it is distinguished from indifference in the context of mindfulness-oriented psychotherapy.
Cancellation policy - WCMI Requires 24 hour notice of cancellation.
